The Biggest Problem with AI Is That You Always Get a Result

When I asked a well-known AI whether a specific business model would work, it answered in a very structured way with good arguments. It weighed the pros and cons cleanly and arrived at well-considered recommendations. Everything clean, everything plausible and immediately actionable. But the problem was: The question was bad. And the AI said nothing about that.

For me the biggest problem with artificial intelligence right now is that you always get a result. To every question. Completely unreflected and far too positively framed.

In any real consultation and in any good conversation there is a moment when the person across from you says: I don’t know, I need to think about it. Or you realize that the question makes no sense at all, let alone a result. These moments are rarely a problem. They are important signals. They bring intuition into play, experience, reflection and important boundaries. Where the professional knowledge ends and you have to go one level deeper in your thinking.

AI doesn’t have this signal because it is programmed to produce answers. Come hell or high water. It always produces. Regardless of whether the question is good or whether the underlying information is sufficient. The output comes without hesitation, always neatly formatted and at first glance very convincing.

The AI industry sells this as a strength. When AI delivers output around the clock, that is maximum efficiency at first glance. But efficiency without quality control is just full speed without purpose.

A doctor who gives a diagnosis for every symptom regardless of whether he knows everything is not automatically a good doctor. A consultant who has an answer to every question right away is often just voicing an opinion. But sometimes the ability to say nothing when there is nothing to say is real competence.

I have been in meetings where the decisive turning point was not the answer but something else. There were moments when someone said: We don’t know. And many finally stopped pretending they knew everything. Because in those moments real thinking often begins. When that moment is missing because a machine fills it before it can form, you don’t lose efficiency. You lose insight and quality.

There is a second problem. Whoever always gets an answer stops checking the question. Why would you rethink your question when the answer is already there? You ask, get the answer and keep working. The loop is already closed before you have noticed you are going in circles.

Good decisions need friction. They need the moment when something doesn’t work, when gaps open up and you see what is really missing. AI skips these moments too often, or actually always. This is certainly not the intention of the developers. It lies in the construction. AI is built to develop solutions as fast as possible, not to question critically.

I use AI almost daily. Its usefulness is undoubtedly revolutionary but I also had to learn that the answers are not the result. At most they are one of many good suggestions or ideas. The difference sounds insignificant, which it is not. Because a suggestion or an idea asks me to verify. But an answer asks me to act.

The standard argument describes AI as a tool for better decisions. But a tool that never says “I don’t know” does not enable better decisions. It enables faster decisions. That is the difference. A huge one. What is missing is calm and pause for real thinking, where ideally you enter an inner space you can trust. Because that is where the moment arises when you realize everything you don’t yet know and should find out before you decide.
